Lost Temple Guardians

The Lost Temple, a buried necromantic mechanism of ancient Khemri design, has surfaced in the Badlands near Maelyrra’s domain. Designed to resurrect the ruling couple of a long lost Khemri dynasty — according to the messenger sent to the witch elf – the device has suffered damage in the intervening centuries. Demanding recognition, obeisance, and patronage in the form of the materials needed for the repair of the device, it was eventually agreed that a blood bowl match could resolve this issue. While normally Maelyrra would handle this sort of thing on her own, in this case she dispatched a messenger asking Mercato to evict this nuisance on her doorstep, with the offer of a reward for their success.

  • The Shadow Band is allowed to settle in Mercato. When Nurgle arrives, the band uses their magic to assist them. For each Mercato piece rostered against Nurgle's Negotiators, roll 1d6. On a 1, apply a Niggling injury to the piece. On a 2, the Mercato coach may select the permanent injury applied to the piece. The player characters make this roll with advantage; Ulsi is immune to the effect; Yasha rolls with disadvantage. These injuries may not be nullified for the match by means such as armor patches and may not be applied to a stat that is already a 1. Similarly, a Niggling injury may not be applied to a piece that already has two. If a double-Niggled piece has a 1 rolled for it, treat it as if a 2 were rolled. The A-B Mithrilite Guild, a joint venture between the House of Artois and the Braundorf Clan, is seeking to extend its trade of mithril and other precious metals between Silverhome and Bretonnia to include Mercato. Arriving at Mercato's doorstep in the guild's land-train caravan, their chief negotiator Antoin d'Artois challenged the city to a blood bowl match to decide the terms for a favorable plot of land on which to base their local operations, for an investment by the city in the venture, and for other financial matters of the arrangement. Eager to see the trade begin, and confident in their remaining players, the Mercato Senate agreed to play the game immediately.

Kavzar Champions

The skaven home city, with a good-will match offered to the winner of the Mercato vs Mountain's Reach game. While orcs, centaurs, and dwarves may make up much of the population of the Waste, it's the skaven that have done the most to tame it, with most significant outposts, oases, and other places of persistent habitation maintained with at least some association with Kavzar. Mountain's Reach

The largest and most populated city in the badlands, set along the broad banks of the Neise River, Mountain's Reach was the first permanent settlement founded by the orcs from the nearby Dark Tooth Mountain enclave, though it now also features a modest population of goblins, skaven, dwarves, bull centaurs, and other peoples common in the area. As the parent city of Mercato, the two maintain strong diplomatic and economic relations.

The dragon Mountainshadow, keeper of the Dark Tooth Mountain enclave that now serves as his lair, retains significant influence over the city, primarily expressed through his elf-voice Gaessandror.

In recent years the city has faced pressure from multiple angles, including encroachment by the expanding Theran Empire to the west, increasing conflict with raiders from the badlands to the southeast, and the growing status of Mercato as the center of trade in the region.

While Mountain's Reach and Mercato maintain a friendly relationship, as the biggest city with the most respected blood bowl team in the region, defeating Mountain's Reach in a match would be a unifying moment for Mercato (allowing for an additional team reroll) and represent its entrance onto a wider diplomatic stage (making more far-ranging opponents available). In addition, an impressive performance might convince one or more of their players to switch over.

Remnants of the Southern Horde

With raiding parties growing in size and ferocity, better relations with the few stable badlands outposts would be helpful. The fallen Bloodletter Khatan Stonehoof has encamped his warhorde at the ruins of the Bronze Fortress, where he and his men have devoted themselves to worship of the Bloodthirster, a powerful Minotaur they believe to be a chosen of the chaos dragon Khorne. As unpredictable as they can be, given the orphic importance the chaos tribes place on the game of blood bowl, beating a team of their bloodwarriors in a match could provide an opportunity for building a productive relationship.

The barons of a collection of badlands plantations are considering augmenting their warbands with undead hired from a nearby necromancer's tower, but want their skill proven before coming to terms. In return for playing a satisfactory game of blood bowl against a team created by the necromancer, the barons will agree to a favorable contract for supplying Mercato with beer, which will provide the Mercato team a duo of beer mavens and the option to install a beer stand in their home stadium. The barons will only consider the game a sufficiently impressive test if at least one of the teams scores a touchdown and if at least one player on either team suffers a casualty (even if it regenerates).

Further, at the barons' insistence that the challenging team have an incentive to compete, the necromancer has agreed—in haste to demonstrate his willingness to prove the quality of his merchandise—that he will serve as an available wizard for Mercato home games if his team is defeated.

Opening Scrimmage

To promote the franchise to the home crowd, Mercato's first match will be against itself. The team captain will have the bull centaur, another PC piece of their choice, and the results of a snake draft in which they decide whether to select first or to select both the second and third choices, alternating by two after. Given orc society's affinity for centaurs, whichever team the bull centaur is on will be considered the home team.

Challenge Description Benefit
Have a non-snotling piece take a permanent injury (stat bust, niggle, or dead). Orcs love blood. Give them something good and you might get one of them to sign up. A lineorc with mighty blow joins the team.
Have a cumulative score of at least three touchdowns. Skaven like to see the ball get played, and their money spends as good as anyone else's. Squig Sandwiches offers the Squig Sandwich Kiosk as a stadium option.
A rookie skaven thrower joins the team.
Inflict a casualty on a piece with the bull centaur. Mercato's bull centaur community is modest but proud. Receive your choice of a one-game Mighty Blow, Juggernaut, or Dauntless skill potion from an approving bull centaur war-fighter.
